We weigh all chicks daily through weaning and thereafter at least weekly for the life of all of our birds. We recommend at least weekly weighing of every adult bird. Many hidden infections and potentially fatal conditions can be detected early if you weigh your bird frequently. Weigh your bird at the same time of the day, preferably first thing in the morning before breakfast. Weights can vary considerably during the day. An adult bird’s weight shouldn’t vary more than 1 or 2 percent on any day . For example, an adult African Grey with a baseline weight of 450 grams should weigh roughly 445 to 455 grams on any particular morning. A weight drop greater than this should be investigated Carefully. Whether you weigh weekly or daily, it is vitally important that you study your bird’s appearance and behavior (especially eating habits) every day. By the time that you notice symptoms of illness your bird might have been sick for some time and the chances of recovery greatly reduced.
